Jamshedpur, Jharkhand | March | Sunday | 13, 2016 :: Raghubar Das, Chief Minister of Jharkhand launched the logo of the UNICEF - CII Eastern Region CSR Hub.
UNICEF India Country Office and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Eastern Region have partnered to jointly strengthen knowledge base and build capacity of corporate sector involvement in CSR, with one of the focus areas being women and children from the Children’s Rights and Business Principals (CRBP) perspective.
The Hub will act as a knowledge centre for holistic CSR activities, as a think tank and play an advisory role for CII members in the region. This will include among others mapping needs, resources, identifying and prioritizing key social development issues/challenges facing the concerned states, developing specific plans and strategies and providing technical guidance towards project development and implementation.
The Chief Minister said, “The companies have a role to play in the development of the state. Economic prosperity will lead to social progress.”
According to Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of UNICEF Jharkhand, “UNICEF is pleased to partner with CII to take forward the agenda of women and child development in the state. We call on the business community to help achieve the 17 Sustainable development Goals (SDGs) that seek to eliminate poverty and hunger, achieve good health, quality education, gender equality, provide clean water and sanitation, and reduce inequality globally.”
She says, “UNICEF has also partnered with the Department of Industries to set up the Jharkhand Corporate Social Responsibility Council, and continues to support the Council in an advisory role. This Council is an innovative model and the first and only such body in India. It has been set up to channelize CSR activities for comprehensive development in the state. The CSR spend in Jharkhand has increased by 142% over last year.”
A B Lall, Chairman, CII Jharkhand said, “The CSR Hub is designed to assist members in their CSR activities by providing consulting services is an advisory capacity, enable members to effectively carry out CSR activities by building their capabilities and ensure transparency and visibility in a range of CSR initiatives taken by CII member companies.”
“The overall goal of the CSR hub is to jointly strengthen knowledge base and builds the capacity of corporate sector involvement in CSR in a holistic manner. Set up as a knowledge sector of CSR related information, the hub will serve as a think-tank and play an advisory role for CSR activities in the region,” said Dr Saugat Mukherjee, Regional Director, CII Eastern Region.
Dr Mukherjee also listed the objectives of the CSR Hub as well as CII’s initiatives to inspire corporates to join CSR activities. “We are working with UNICEF and other stakeholders to create the ‘Right Partner Ecosystem’ for CII members, generate greater awareness and foster a socially responsible business environment in the state and the region,” said Dr Mukherjee, adding that another goal is to achieve greater impact by providing a common strategic direction and plan.
The launch was attended by industry leaders and other stakeholders.
